While geofencing has been around for 2 – 3 yrs, with the ability to track locations with minimal battery drain and target content to users, geofencing has found increased usage in mobile apps today. In addition to geofences which monitor the location of the users outdoors, iBeacons and indoor location have taken off in a big way to target users when they are inside a building. While there are approx 30,000 active beacons currently, it is estimated by ABI research that by 2019, this number will grow to 60 million. Retailers are driving the usage of Beacons – half of the top 100 retailers are testing or deploying beacons in their stores and are seeing 16.5x in-store app usage because of it. According to a Business Insider Report, the beacon installed base will see a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 287%. There will be about 4.5 million active beacons overall by year end 2018, with 3.5 million of these in use by retailers. Also, the beacon installed base should continue to double every six months through 2016.

Museums can use this to trigger a push notification to visitors when they have a new exhibit, retail stores can push new products etc. based on past activity in the store or cruises and theme parks can push recommendations in the morning based on what you have done the previous day.
